Matt Rhule is out and it’s doubtful Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilkes will be anything more than that, an interim head coach.

So who will be the Panthers head coach in 2023 as the team tries to rebound from the failed Rhule experiment and get back to being a playoff team? According to most sports books, former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is the favorite, with another former head coach from the NFC South, Dan Quinn also at short odds.

Here are the odds by NJ’s key betting apps on the next head coach of the Panthers.

Sean Payton (+155): Payton, who “retired’’ from the New Orleans Saints after last season, has all but said he’ll be back in 2023. And the Super Bowl-winning coach will be in high demand. A plus for the Panthers is Payton knows the NFC South. The minuses are he will likely have better choices and the compensation that will be owed to the Saints.

Dan Quinn (+220): The former Atlanta Falcons head coach has re-established himself as the Cowboys defensive coordinator and will also be in demand after the Cowboys defensive showing this season. Quinn could work for the Panthers, but the team might be looking for someone with an offensive background.

Kellen Moore (+333): And that could be Moore, the Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator and play caller. He’s shown in 2022 that he can win with a backup quarterback in Cooper Rush. Moore has been on team’s short lists for years. This might be the year he gets hired. And it might be the Panthers on the other end.

Jim Caldwell (+478): The former head coach of the Indianapolis Colts (2009-11) and Detroit Lions (2014-17) has been out of the league since he was a Miami Dolphins assistant in 2019 and will turn 68 in January. The Panthers are likely thinking younger.

Ron Rivera (+990): The former Panthers head coach could be on the outs in Washington where he is currently the head coach. A return to Carolina seems highly unlikely.

Shane Steichen (+1250): Here’s a name to keep in mind and maybe even make a wager. Steichen is the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator and took over the play calling duties from head coach Nick Sirianni in 2022. The Eagles are playing well and quarterback Jalen Hurts has made huge strides. That’s how assistant coaches become head coaches.

Jamey Chadwell (+1400): Chadwell is a hero in South Carolina where he has turned Coastal Carolina into a well respected NCAA program out of the Sun Belt Conference. Would he cross the border into Charlotte? Maybe. But it’s hard to imagine the Panthers going the college route after Rhule failed.

DeMeco Ryans (+2800): This is another name to watch. The former Pro Bowl middle linebacker and current San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator is a rising star among assistants. He’s going to be a head coach soon and the Panthers might be a good spot for him. At those odds he might be worth a play.
