Eagles Take Texas Tech CB Zech McPhearson with the 123rd Pick
The Philadelphia Eagles used the fourth-round pick they acquired in the trade with the Miami Dolphins on Texas Tech cornerback Zech McPhearson.
McPhearson is the only cornerback taken in the draft by the Eagles, a position of need heading into the offseason. The 5-foot-11, 191-pound McPhearson started his career at Penn State before transferring to play at Texas Tech in 2019.
"I take pride in being versatile and being able to do multiple things on the field whether it's inside, outside, or even back at safety," McPhearson said.
In 2020, McPhearson was named first-team All-Big 12 posting four interceptions and breaking up 10 passes.
"We like him, his versatility, ability to play outside, his ability to play inside, his ball skills, football intelligence. He's a team captain," explained Eagles Vice President of Player Personnel Andy Weidl.
Per Pro Football Focus:
McPhearson allowed just 0.72 yards per coverage snap on the outside, which ranked 22nd in the FBS, and allowed only six gains of 15 or more yards on over 400 coverage snaps"
McPhearson posted a 41-inch vertical jump, helping him with his ability to challenge 50/50 balls.
McPhearson could have a chance to play right away, joining Darius Slay, Craig James, Avonte Maddox, Michael Jacquet III and Kevon Seymour in the Eagles inexperienced cornerback room.
