The popularity of tequila has risen over the past decade; it is not just for margarita’s anymore.

What also has gone by the wayside is the myth that you do not need good tequila when mixing it with juices or any cocktail mix. If you want a nice tasting Margarita, you need a nice tasting tequila.

Good ingredients give you a good cocktail.

You also do not have to spend your weekly salary on a bottle of Patrón Silver. There are now more tequila options that are slightly higher than the bargain brand of tequila. Bargain brands are rough tasting with a strong biting finish. This will affect your margarita, sangria, tequila sunrise, and specifically when consumed without any mixers.

Do tequila research, which can be fun experience, pick a price range that you are willing to pay and find out what other consumers are saying and look at the reviews.

My favorite margarita uses good tequila and fresh ingredients that will make you enjoy every sip.

As a disclaimer, this drink is so refreshing and tasty that you will find yourself drinking more than you have planned. Be careful.

This is a pink grapefruit, margarita and made with freshly squeezed red ruby grapefruit juice; if you do not have time for squeezing red ruby grapefruits, try Ocean Spray Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice. I have used that when serving a few friends and it works well. I use Grand Marnier in this margarita, while it has orange overtones, it softens the bitterness of the grapefruit.

In a blender mix:

The juice of 5-6 red ruby grapefruits (depending on size) is about two cups (do not use frozen grapefruit juice, you can prepare and squeeze ahead of time.)

4 ounces of Grand Marnier (some people like Triple Sec but the flavor of Grand Marnier is best.)

8-10 ounces of good tequila (any 100% de agave tequila works wonderfully.)

Blend ingredients for about 30 – 45 seconds

Fill pitcher halfway with ice, cubes, not crushed, add blended ingredients to ice filled pitcher, stir well. You can salt the rims of your glasses or if you do not like salt, you can lightly sugar the rims instead. Using a strainer pour into chilled glasses and garnish with a slice of lime or grapefruit.

Serve immediately and often. Enjoy!

Note: If you want to make these ahead of time, you can mix the freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, Grand Marnier and tequila but do not put any ice in it until ready to serve.

New and classic favorites: The best dive bars in New Jersey

The term "dive bar" used to be something derogatory. Nowadays it's more of a badge of honor to say to own one, go to one, or work at one.

We started in South Jersey, stopped A LOT in Central Jersey and ended in North Jersey. We left out the Jersey Shore bar because there are just too many to choose from. If your favorite isn't on the list, don't be offended, just tell us about it. Here we go...
