New York Mets Fans Need to Take a Deep Breath
The New York Mets completed a 7 game road trip by losing to the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 on Sunday. In case you missed it, the loss was just a sour cherry on a terrible cake. Former Met Zach Wheeler put all of the nails in the Amazin's coffin completing the 3 game sweep with a 2 hit shutout. Philadelphia not only took over first place from the Mets, it looked like they knocked over their books and took New York's lunch money. The Mets finished the road trip 1-6 and are now in third place, after starting Friday in first. Bad news? Yes. End of the season? Not so fast...
The Mets are without, arguably, their best two players in Jacob deGrom and Francisco Lindor. deGrom isn't expected back for a few more weeks BUT he is expected back with 5 or 6 starts left. That is good news. Some Mets fans are not on the same page that Lindor is one of the Mets best players but he is. Part of some player's greatness is the way that they elevate their teammates. Francisco Lindor does that as well as anyone. Remember, until he got hurt the Mets were holding onto first place.
Yes the Mets are 2.5 games out of first now and they have 13 games coming up against the Dodgers and the Giants. That is certainly not a lucky 13 for the Amazin's. However, the Mets hung on to the top spot in the National League East through a rash of injuries that would have decimated many teams. They just kept plugging away and realistically, they are still in this race. All is not over.
Taijuan Walker pitched well yesterday for the first time in almost two months. Macus Stroman pitched well on Friday and Tylor Megill on Saturday. Rich Hill and Carlos Carasco have been steady. The Mets are coming home with a day off on Monday and three games against the Washington Nationals. Take a deep breath and hang in there Mets fans.
