The Surprising World Series Odds for Each New York Baseball Team
One half down, one half to go in the pursuit of a World Series victory.
The second half of the MLB season begins TONIGHT, and only two teams will be in action. Major League Baseball is shining its spotlight on the best rivalry in the sport, the New York Yankees against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees enter play tonight with a bit of a hill to climb, coming in with a record of 46-43, eight games behind the Boston Red Sox. The Sox, meanwhile, sit atop the AL East with a record of 55-36. The Mets, meanwhile, also sit atop their division with a record of 47-40. They're idle this evening, traveling to Pittsburgh to battle the Pirates in a series beginning tomorrow.
As the amount of games remaining in the regular season begin to dwindle, the oddsmakers begin to separate the contenders from the pretenders, and give us all odds on which teams will win the World Series. Here's where the New York teams stack up, and which direction the odds have been trending.
New York Yankees
Odds as of June 1st: 17/2 (+850)
Odds as of July 1st: 14/1 (+1400)
Current-Day Odds: 25/1 (+2500)
Analysis: Well, if you still believe in the New York Yankees, there's no better time than the present to put your money behind them. Numbers for the Bombers vary pretty vastly on different sportsbooks, but almost all of them have saddled New York with long odds.
New York Mets
Odds as of June 1st: 9/1 (+900)
Odds as of July 1st: 10/1 (+1000)
Current-Day Odds: 9/1 (+900)
Analysis: The Mets' odds were likely going to continue to lengthen before their roster began to get healthy. With stars like Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto back in the fold, the Mets have been returned to "serious contender" status from a comparative standpoint. If they can add an arm or two to their rotation, these odds will continue to shrink.
