Did The Mets Use A Rod?
The sale of the New York Mets appears to be pretty cut and dry at this point. The Mets and Billionaire Steve Cohen are in exclusive talks to finalize the investment banker buying the team. This news clearly came as a bit of a surprise to Alex Rodriguez and his fiance Jennifer Lopez. A Rod is crying foul! He feels like the Mets may have done some shady things to get the bid they wanted from Cohen.
According to the New York Post Mets banker Steve Greenberg of Allen and Co. push A Rod and his group to show him exactly what his group's upcoming bid would be before the deadline. Once A Rod shared the details of his upcoming $2.3 billion bid, Steve Cohen made a $2.35 billion bid:
The former Yankees third baseman is now convinced that the Mets spoon-fed his bid information to Cohen so the billionaire financier and art collector could have the highest offer and win the team. “They took the bids and showed them to Cohen,” a source familiar with A-Rod’s thinking claimed.
The Mets and Cohen declined comment. Greenberg didn’t return calls for comment.
If this is the case it stinks for A Rod and his group but I think we knew sooner or later Cohen would get the Mets. If anything this just sped the process along.
